“I’m fine, thank you. And you?”

If you say “How are you?” to a Japanese,

he or she may say “I’m fine, thank you. And you?”

This phrase is not wrong, but it may sound a little awkward to native English speakers.

The reason why you hear this phrase very often in Japan is because almost all the Japanese students learned this when they were in 7th Grade.
